Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors

What is Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors?

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are a cluster of habitual behaviors that involve repetitive and compulsive actions directed at the body. These behaviors can cause physical damage and significant distress. Examples include Trichotillomania (hair pulling), Skin Picking (dermatillomania), and nail-biting.

Symptoms

The primary symptom is the repetitive behavior itself, which the individual feels compelled to perform. This is often accompanied by feelings of tension before the behavior and relief or pleasure afterward. The behaviors can lead to physical injury, such as hair loss, skin lesions, and infections.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help?

Hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for BFRBs by addressing the underlying anxiety and compulsive urges that drive the behaviors. It can help individuals to become more aware of their triggers and to develop alternative, healthier coping strategies. Through suggestion and visualization, a hypnotherapist can help to reduce the urge to engage in the repetitive behavior and to build a sense of control.
